Ms. Iris Shiripinda is National Co-ordinator for STIs/hiv among migrants and ethnic minorities at Soa Aids Netherlands. She was born and raised in Zimbabwe and has studied at the University of Zimbabwe, after which she studied genderstudies at the Institute of Social Studies Den Haag and medical anthropology at the University of Amsterdam. Her Ph.D. research was on sexual ideologies, practices and HIV/AIDS prevention by women in Southern Africa. Iris Shiripinda participates in this morningsession.
Ms. Dorothy Okello is coordinator for the Women of Uganda Network (Wougnet). She studied and lectured Electrical Engineering at the Makere University in Uganda, and studied the same subject at the University of Kansas in the United States. Her Ph.D. – also in Electrical Engineering – was done at the McGill University in Montreal Canada. Dorothy Okello has worked on getting more women and rural communities engaged in the information society for development, through both gender and ICT policy advocacy and programme implementation and monitoring & evaluation.
Ms. Njeri Kabeberi is a board member of the Kenya Human Rights Commission and Executive Director of the Centre for Multiparty Democracy in Kenya (CMD). She works to promote inclusive, representative and well organized political parties, multi-party dialogue and political education and capacity building. Mr. Wambua Kawive is Chief Executive Officer of the Kenyan Constitution and Reform Education Consortium (CRECO), which is a network of Civil Society Organizations in the democracy, governance and human rights sector. With CRECO Wambua Kawive strives to achieve a coordinated facilitation of communities to effectively and meaningfully participate in processes that safeguard constitutionalism and the rule of law. Mr. Allan Raggi is Executive Director of the Kenya Aids NGOs Consortium (KANCO), based in Nairobi. KANCO is an eminent NGO network with 870 registered member-organizations. It is well known for its contribution to the national aids movement in Kenya. The consortium aims to reinforce the capacity of its registered member organizations. KANCO is at the forefront of lobby and advocacy for the rights of people with HIV/AIDS and other vulnerable groups. Allan Raggi participates in this morningsession.
Jackie Branfield is the founder and director of operation Bobbi Bear, which she runs together with Eureka Olivier, Administrator. This is a South African NGO that helps children who have been sexually abused. She developed the unique Bobbi Bear method, revolving around a toy bear, to not only help children deal with their trauma and assess the HIV risk of the abuse, but also to assist the child in getting her/his perpetrator convicted. During the Q&A workshop she will talk about child abuse, HIV/AIDS, the judicial system and the volunteer program Bobbi Bear runs. Jackie Branfield received an Ashoka fellowship for this program. Olivier Nyirubugara comes from Rwanda and has been living in the Netherlands since 2004. At this moment, he works as content coordinator for www.africanews.com, where he supervises a mobile reporting project, among others. Olivier graduated in English Literature from the University of Bangui (CAR) and later in Digital Media Studies from Leiden University (The Netherlands). He is currently writing a PhD dissertation in Media Studies at the University of Amsterdam. Olivier entered the media arena in 2002 as correspondent of various international news agencies in the Central African Republic (IRIN News, Deutsche Welle, amongst others).
