Soccerplayer George Weah about the power of soccer

George Weah, the African soccerplayer of the century and presidential candidate in Liberia, will talk about the power of soccer in Africa during the Africaday; the importance and role of soccer in a country recovering of a civilwar, in the political process and peacebuilding and in reconcilement and truce. He will give us his vision on the power of soccer in South Africa: What will the World Cup bring SA?

George Weah is still one of the most succesful African soccerplayers ever. He grew up in the slum 'Clara Town' in Monrovia and build up his career at Paris Saint Germain and continued at AC Milan. In 1995 George Weah was chosen as World soccer player of the year.

Liberia was torn apart by the civil war, but George Weah knew how to give people hope. The parties ceased fighting during the matches of the Lone Start - the national team - that Weah brought back to life. He also invests in organizations who aim to bring hope back to Africa. Being ambassador of Unicef, he is working on educative programmes on AIDS and is supporting child soldiers who are traumatized by war. The war in Liberia ended in 2003, thanks to the interference of the UN. There are still 13.000 blue berets in Liberia to protect the recently started democracy.

George Weah will speak during the plenary programme about the power of soccer and will participate in the workshop 'De macht van de bal'. Weah will sign together with Edwin Schoon (writer of the book: 'De macht van de bal') the book in which he is the main character.
